The Top Seal on Cups and Trays

Lidding Rollstock is a roll of film with a heat-seal coating on one side. You place it over a filled cup, tray, or tub. A heat sealer presses down. The film bonds to the rim of the container. The consumer then peels it off to eat the product. We make this for yogurt, pudding, ready meals, pet food, and even paint cups.

A yogurt brand had complaints about their lids. The lids tore into small pieces when peeled. Pieces fell into the yogurt. We analyzed their container rim material – it was polystyrene (PS). Their old lid used a generic seal layer. We formulated a peelable seal layer specifically for PS. The new lid peeled off in one piece. No tearing. The brand saw a 90% drop in customer complaints. They switched all 15 of their yogurt lines to our Lidding Rollstock.

The seal strength is critical. Too strong, and the consumer cannot open it. Too weak, and the lid leaks. Our standard peel strength is 8 to 12 Newtons per 15mm width. That is the sweet spot – easy to open but secure enough for shipping. We offer two peel types: easy-peel (smooth peel, no noise) and audible-peel (makes a popping sound when opened – some brands like this because it signals freshness). The film itself can be PET, aluminum, or paper. PET is clear. Aluminum is opaque and gives high barrier. Paper is eco-friendly.
